Developed to aid in long-term weight loss, the LAP-BAND® System has been used by leading laparoscopic surgeons worldwide to treat severe obesity.
The Adjustable gastric band system is a form of weight loss surgery designed for obesity patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40, greater or a BMI of 35 with comorbilities. It consists of an inflatable silicone band which is placed around the upper portion of a person’s stomach via laparoscopic surgery.

The implanted device creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach which fills up quickly and restricts the movement of the food into the bottom part of the stomach.
This restriction creates a feeling of fullness which helps the person to eat less, and therefore lose weight in a healthy gradual manner.
The band is adjustable via a subcutaneous access port with a saline solution to help increase the feeling of restriction to achieve the optimal weight loss.
The ability to adjust the restriction makes this a good choice for women who wish to become pregnant after losing weight. The band can be unfilled to allow for more food to be eaten as necessary for a healthy pregnancy.
Before to access to the surgical placement of the LAPBAND Adjustable Gastric Banding System, some pre-operatory test must be performed to establish the exact condition of operability of the patient. These tests consist of: Preliminary visit to evaluate the BMI ( Body Mass Index ) Electrocardiogram Tele-thorax nutritional evaluation, from a nutritionist thyroidal profile pre-operatory evaluation.
Here in Tijuana we offer all the necessary logistic assistance, including your recovery at our brand new club-house, flights, medical appointments, pick up from and to San Diego airport.
The duration of the surgery is approximately 40 minutes and requries only a one night stay in our recovery guest house. In general, patients can go back to his / her normal activities a week after the operation.
The Lap-Band is not filled at the time of surgery as a six week period of time must elapse to allow for all the swelling to go down. During this time, the patient will feel some restriction but not as much as once they have their first fill (adjustment). It is at this time that the weight loss will really begin.
The surgeon performs the gastric sleeve and lap-band procedures laparoscopically using an instrument with a tiny camera that is introduced into the belly through several small incisions. Although this is a minimally invasive procedure compared to one that is performed through an abdominal incision, any surgical procedure involves some risks. Complications may include hemorrhage (bleeding), blood clots, leaking at the surgical site, or infection. Possible anesthesia complications could include breathing problems and allergic reactions. There is also some risk of damage to the stomach, intestines or other organs, internal scarring or leaking from the surgical site.
